SV magazine goes digital and English2016-10-12
Dear Aficionados of the German Shepherd in our WUSV member clubs:

The German Shepherd Dog is getting more and more popular abroad. This is also reflected by the high number of foreign members who join the Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (SV) e.V. and therefore it matters to us to also offer our monthly magazine in English.

The SV webpage as well as our databank SV-DOxS are already available in English. But this is not supposed to be the ending of our unlimited commitment.

The SV magazine goes digital and English!

From now on the SV magazine will also be translated into English. Beginning with the September 2016 issue the English translation will be available on our homepage. The project is initially scheduled for the next four issues of the paper *. This new service will save our readers abroad time and offers more convenience while reading in their native language.

For access to the free of charge trial offer of the digital version of the SV magazine (September Issue) translated into English please follow this link:
http://www.schaeferhunde.de/fileadmin/SV/Zeitung/092016/index.html#1

Next steps to be taken if SV-members desire to change from the SV magazine hard copy in German to the digital version in English

If there is sufficient demand for a digital, English version of the SV magazine, and enough readers decide to change from the hard copy issue in German to the digital version in English we will continue the publication of the English paper in 2017. From then on the digital version will be available as download in a password protected area of the SV homepage. Please note that for all readers who opt for the digital version of the paper we will stop the postal delivery of the hard copy in German to their home addresses!

For the continuation of the project we do need the feedback of our readers and kindly ask the members of our WUSV clubs who are interested in our new service to fill in a contact form which can be obtained by following this link:
https://www.schaeferhunde.de/en/navigation/service/the-club/sv-magazine/contactform-englishissue

The fee that we will have to charge for the delivery of the paper in English will remain the same as for the postal delivery and amounts to 29.00 € per year. So nothing will really change in terms of the prices we charge. To the contrary: our members abroad who so far paid 49.00 € for air freight do indeed benefit from our new service.

Your members are not yet members of the SV?

It is important to know that the SV magazine is only available for members of our organization. This applies for the German issue (hard copy) as well as for the digital issue. However, aficionados of the German Shepherd dog abroad who become a member of the SV do not only benefit from the digital version of the SV magazine in English.

As a member to the SV your members would also have free access to the master data of our online-databank SV-DOxS which is also available in English. For more information please click on:
https://www.sv-doxs.net/page/waserwartetsie?lang=en

Last but not least members of the SV will find at any time up-to-date information about the German Shepherd and it’s association on the homepage of the SV which will also from now on be available in English. To find out more please go to: https://www.schaeferhunde.de/en

This is a truly great opportunity for all aficionados of the German Shepherd dog from all over the world who wish to get in touch with likeminded people and experts alike. If your members are interested they really should not miss out on this special service and use our contact form which you find at
https://www.schaeferhunde.de/en/navigation/service/the-club/sv-magazine/contactform-englishissue

*Important information: the judge reports as published in the December issue of the SV magazine will NOT be translated and published in English!

We would like to kindly ask our WUSV member organizations to pass this information on to their members in a timely fashion and maybe publish it on their club homepages and make sure they will not miss out on our latest service. We can only continue the publication of the SV magazine in English in 2017 if there is sufficient demand for that kind of service. Please help us to keep this project alive and create a platform for the SV magazine in English that provides our members abroad with a chance for intercommunication and dialogue all over the world!

If you require further information please do not hesitate to contact us and we will happily assist you. Thank you very much for your time and kind support!

ZAP2016-08-30
Please read the important information on a new temperament test and a possible new German Shepherd Dog breed certification/authorization program from the SV called the Zuchtanlagenpruefung (ZAP).

~ At the SV Annual General Meeting on May 17th 2017 a decision will be made on instituting Zuchtanlagenpruefung (ZAP)

~ At the present time participation in the temperament test that will be used for ZAP is voluntary.

~ GSSCC/SV Judge Raino Fluegge is a SV temperament judge for this temperament test and the only SV temperament judge outside Germany. At this time approximately 25 Judges are accredited.

~If the SV agrees to  implement ZAP, all German Shepherd dogs born in Germany after July 01st, 2017 will have to be temperament tested when they are between 9 and 13 months old‎.

- The young dog temperament test will be mandatory to receive a ZAP.

~ Any BH/IPO titles already awarded will not be effected.

~ The dogs temperament result will be placed on their pedigree.

~ ZAP will have temperament and working ability test with described anatomy.

~ ZAP will allow to breed without a title once.

~ ZAP will not replace a breed survey.

~ ZAP will have two judges (selected working judges and show judges).

The GSSCC is following this development and will update the membership accordingly.

In Memoriam - Lyn Hunter-Greenhalgh2016-07-25

IN MEMORIAM
Lyn (Lynda) Hunter-Greenhalgh;
(June 1951 - July 21 2016)

Wife of the late Lynn Frederick Greenhalgh, daughter of the late Audrey Foden and Mathew Hunter, step daughter of the late John William Foden
and niece of Joan Holt of Alberta

Lyn passed away peacefully with close friends by her side. Those who know Lyn know it was not quite that simple. She loved life and fought for it with dogged determination and incredible dignity. Lyn was very aware that her life was coming to an end. After being ill for some 5 years and then spending a year in hospital with constantly deteriorating health and an inevitable end, she scheduled her passing on her own terms and in her own way.

Lyn had a passion for working horses and working dogs and competing with them. She lived her life immersed in both those worlds. A member of the GSSCC for 24 years, she was a founding member of the Toronto Schutzhund club. She was a mentor for many and helped guide that club for years. She handled numerous dogs in the sport of schutzhund and competed at a national level with multiple dogs, starting with Dobermanns and then with German Shepherds.

The GSSCC and all of us who had the privilege to spend time with her have lost a classy and very positive individual who provided guidance and leadership both on and off the competition field for many years. She was a practical and logical lady who stated her case clearly and to the point. Those close to her have lost a deeply loyal friend and a mentor in so many ways.

On that very warm July summer day, resting comfortably under the shade of a giant old maple on the front lawn of her home, her final moments were dedicated to those who had stood by her side for most of her life. She had a couple of sips of a strawberry daiquiri and then put it aside, claiming it would “upset her stomach”. She made us all laugh with that.

She gave everyone present a few personal moments and then in characteristic fashion, stated “it’s time because the heat is making it difficult for me to breathe”.

She left peacefully and on her own terms, exactly as she planned.

Her great big smile is gone but the glow lives on with all of those she warmed with it.

In her memory, donations can be made to Toronto General Hospital Lung Transplant Clinic or to Team Canada, for the German Shepherd Schutzhund Club of Canada

Important messages from the WUSV2016-07-21

Important messages from the WUSV regarding FCI Judges.
(This does not pertain to GSSCC, USCA or GSDCA Judges). This issue will be discussed further at the WUSV AGM in September, 2016 and reported back to the membership.

In terms of the performance judges only the evaluations as taken by SV approved judges can be accepted and the same applies for the titles earned. Regarding the show dog judges – however – the titles earned can be approved of provided that the show in questions was an all-breed show and was previously to the event published in the schedule of the FCI. Nevertheless, this does not apply for the permission for breeding with those dogs in Germany respectively under German standard.

With kind regards from Augsburg!

Hartmut Setecki

World Union of the Asssociations of German Shepherds (WUSV) e.V./ registered association
- Secretariat General –

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen:
On the occasion of the WUSV-General Assembly on September 07, 2015 was approved of by the congregation.
The newly adopted version implies, among other issues, that the daily business and area of operations of the WUSV is subject to the regulations of the SV to the effect that the SV regulations for the training of judges now also applies to the member organizations of the WUSV in that respect.

The WUSV judges that had been already appointed by that time shall be assigned to the status of SV foreign judges according to the speech as delivered by the WUSV president Professor Dr. Heinrich Meßler on the occasion of the assembly. The WUSV training seminar attended by the judges who are affected by this adoption to the WUSV statutes shall be recognized as a basic respectively introductory seminar
For the time being the regulation for judges of the SV is reviewed in that respect and the details concerning the training and career of SV foreign judges are currently finalized by our legal department in cooperation with a task force to be submitted to the Federal Assembly of the SV in May 2016 for the approval that this procedure requires.
For the above mentioned reasons the appointments of WUSV judges that were granted in the past and up to the year 2014 are currently pending. As a result, we regret very much having to inform you that the SV cannot grant any judge releases for WUSV judges during this ongoing process.
We will keep you duly informed about all results and developments in this respect and thank you for your kind consideration.
With kind regards

Hartmut Setecki

President's Message - January 20, 20162016-01-20

 Hi GSSCC,

CORRECTION - The winning Region for the membership drive was not the Ontario region as I had earlier reported. The Ontario region had the most new GSSCC members but when we re-read the original motion regarding Regions, it stated - $1,000.00 for highest percentage increase for first-time new member by Region. The winning region was the East region with 32 % growth. Congratulations East and again, congratulations to the club winners! They are:

1st place- Winnipeg Working Dog Club

2nd place- Central New Brunswick Schutzhund Club

3rd place- Scarborough Select German Shepherd Schutzhund Club

At the end of 2015, the GSSCC has 740 members!

Stay tuned for a new E Newsletter due out soon. Shepherd Sports magazine should be arriving in our mailboxes soon as well.

Season's Greetings from the President of the SV-WUSV2015-12-23

Season't Greetings 2015
Christmas time is finally here.
It only comes but once a year,
And it's a time to spread good cheer
To those we love and hold so dear. “

Dear WUSV-Members:
Ladies and Gentlemen:

It’s been almost seven months now that I have been in office as the new president to both the SV and the WUSV. Seven months that flew by and kept me very busy, indeed. First of all I immediately began to dedicate myself to the implementation of my manifesto which is – and that goes without saying – on top of my list. But apart from the focus that I put on my priorities I got the chance to take a closer look at both the SV and the WUSV. I saw the offices, learned about the administration which I found positively efficient, met the employees who all showed so much enthusiasm for their jobs, and I got the chance to speak to many members of the SV and to people from all over the world who either represented their respective WUSV member clubs in Germany or who simply came as guests to attend a conformation- or breeding show. And I have to say that those encounters turned out to be most rewarding experience for me. Thanks to all the good conversations that I had the chance to have with people from all walks of life I got to see a lot of things from a very different perspective. It goes without saying that I was already highly motivated when I decided to run for my new office. But it was the opportunity to meet so many of you out there in person that fulfilled my office with even more life and the motivation I felt before even multiplied.

I am confident that the future of our clubs and the past time activities that we all share looks bright and promising. And yet, there are problems to tackle, difficulties to solve, and things that need to be put right again. I made that no secret on the occasion of the WUSV Annual General Assembly in September this year and was more than pleased to see the broad range of willingness for cooperation I met there. This meeting once again reaffirmed me about the strength and power that drives our global organization and that everybody will be willing to provide his or her share in terms of the challenges and the mission ahead of us. As a matter of fact, the future of our breed depends on the cooperation of both the SV and the WUSV on a worldwide level.

So I wish all of you a very merry Christmas, a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year and good luck for all the endeavors which you have on top of your personal list. I am looking forward to 2016 and to our common work.

With my best wishes for you and your families and all your four legged friends,

Very truly yours,

Professor Dr. Heinrich Meßler

Shepherd Sports 2015 Fall Edition

• an update on the Winnipeg Working Dog Club’s successful rebuilding efforts.

• reports from clubs across the country.

Deadline for the Winter 2015 issue, which will be a print issue and will include reports from the FCI and WUSV Worlds, is December 15.

President's Message - October 26, 20152015-10-28

On Monday, Oct. 26, the GSSCC Board of Directors unanimously approved a new policy regarding membership. This policy is effective immediately and will be brought for ratification by the membership at the 2016 Annual General Meeting.

Anyone who trains a dog at any club of the German Shepherd Schutzhund Club of Canada, or‎ is a member of any club of the German Shepherd Schutzhund Club of Canada, must be a current member of the German Shepherd Schutzhund Club of Canada.

Importe qui qui entraîne un chien à un club de le Club du Berger Allemand du Canada, ou qui est membre d'un club de la Club du Berger Allemand du Canada, doit être un membre actuel du Berger Allemand Schutzhund Club du Canada.

There are many reasons for implementing such a policy. It builds the membership base; it gives individuals access to all our assets, including trained helpers and being able to participate in GSSCC programs. But by far, the most important reason is for insurance coverage. Our GSSCC members will not be insured unless everyone involved in the sport is a GSSCC member. We (GSSCC members) pay our insurance and should feel confident that we are covered by it.

The Board of Directors will work with the Regions and all Clubs to ensure everyone follows this policy. After all, it is in everyone’s best interest that we’re all covered by insurance.

To help make it easier to become a GSSCC member, our IT committee is moving forward in creating an electronic membership application and renewal process. Wouldn’t it be convenient to receive your GSSCC membership card by e-mail and be able to show it from your iPhone?

To assist us in creating this and other electronic programs, we need your current e-mail address. If you haven’t done it already, please click the link below to do this.

President's Message - October 21, 20152015-10-21

The GSSCC executive approved the following prorated membership fee effective immediately:

January 1 to June 30 - a new member joining will pay $115 and their membership expires in January. i.e. - New member who joins in June 2015 pays $115 and the membership expires January 1, 2016.

July 1 to December 31 a new member joining will pay a prorated fee for the months left in that year plus $115 for the next year. Those memberships will expire the second January.  i.e. - New member joins today (October), pays $28.75 plus $115 for a total of $143.75 and the membership expires January 1, 2017.

Expired members that re-join will have to pay $115 anytime (no prorate) PLUS a $50 administration fee and their membership expires the following January. A new membership number will be issued.  i.e. - expired member joins in July 2015, pays $115 plus $50 for a total of $165 and the membership expires in January 1, 2016.

No partial payments will be accepted.

The IT committee is making progress with the online membership program. Once it becomes active the entire membership application and renewal process will be easy, quick and user friendly.

To assist us in this process as well as other electronic programs the GSSCC is creating such as a GSSCC organization group email please update your email address or add an email address to a Family Membership.   If you haven’t done it already please click the below link to do this.

President's Message - October 1, 20152015-10-01

Hello GSSCC members.

Congratulations to WUSV Team Canada and FCI Team Canada for representing the GSSCC and Canada! Special mention to Darren and Shanon for breaking the top 20 at their first World Championship!

Also, congratulations to the newest certified club in the GSSCC. IPO Nord, led by club president Helene Develay held an accreditation trial under GSSCC Judge Frank McEniry and passed with flying colours. We wish your club well in the future.

Regarding proof of hip and elbow clearance at the World Championship, the WUSV has informed me that a certificate from the organization that certified the hips and elbows is acceptable (OFA, etc.).  A GSSCC Breed Survey cannot serve as proof of the hip/elbow certification.

I would like to remind everyone that as of today, Debbie Reynolds will be the new Membership Coordinator. All new memberships, membership renewals and enquiries will be handled by Debbie. She is currently responsible for processing the trial/show paperwork & registration of scorebooks. Her address is listed on the GSSCC website on the contact page.

The Board of Directors will have a conference call meeting with the Regional Representatives this Monday, October 5th. If you would like us to address anything, please let your Regional Board know.

I would like to thank the membership for using the link to update your e-mail. Since my last report, we had more than 100 members do this. We still have more that are needed so if you haven’t done it, please take a minute to update your e-mail address for the GSSCC.  Here is the link  http://www.jotformpro.com/DogSportForms/GssccMemberDatabase

President's Message - September 16, 20152015-09-16

Hello GSSCC members.

The Board of Directors had a conference call meeting with the Regional Representatives on Monday night. East, Ontario and Prairie Region each had a representative for the meeting. We had a great meeting with open communication and the executive will work on a number of items suggested by the Regions.

One item that came up was that some members feel they don’t know what our GSSCC insurance coverage is. Jennifer Jones is now working with our insurance agent to develop an easy to read document outlining the coverage. Once we have that we will get it to our members.  In order to be covered by the GSSCC insurance, there are two points that are very clear: 1) You have to be a GSSCC member, and 2) You must have signed and submitted a liability waiver.

As a result of being elected President I have stepped down as East Region Chair. The new East Chairperson is Raino Fluegge and Training Director is Kip Day. Thanks guys.

The Board of Directors would like to remind the Regions and Club about the GSSCC membership drive currently ongoing. The drive is from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2015.

The following awards will go to the clubs with the most first time new GSSCC members in 2015:

  • $1000 for first place
  • $500 for second place
  • $250 for third place.
  • $1000 to the Region for the highest percentage increase for first time new GSSCC member in that Region.

IMPORTANT NEWS

Beginning Oct. 1, Debbie Reynolds will be the new Membership Coordinator. All new memberships, membership renewals and enquires will be handled by Debbie. She is currently responsible for processing the trial/show paperwork & registration of scorebooks. Her address is listed on the GSSCC website on the contact page. A big thank you to Debbie for taking on this extremely important job.

The IT committee has met again and is working very well together towards our goal of setting up an electronic membership program as well as other GSSCC paperwork.

As a regular member, you can help our organization! Please take a minute to update your email address right here for the GSSCC.

The link is  http://www.jotformpro.com/DogSportForms/GssccMemberDatabase

Having your updated address is extremely important as we move toward electronic memberships and paperwork. This will make it easier in the long run for everyone – for you, for us, for trial secretaries, etc.

I have just received announcement from the WUSV that for the 2016 WUSV Championships “the verification of an examination of the hips and elbows has to be shown in the pedigree.”

The CKC registration/pedigrees do not have a place for this and they have informed me that this won’t change. I will find out from the WUSV how a member will provide proof of hips and elbow clearance and report back to the membership. The actual announcement from the WUSV is on the website and the next edition of Shepherd Sports.

I would like to wish Team Canada WUSV a great World Championship and we will all be following you. The website link in English is http://www.wusv-wm2015.fi/english

President's message August 26, 20152015-08-26

Hello GSSCC.

Here’s another quick update on our latest board meeting – held last night. We made a number of decisions:

  • The Show Coordinators will be Andrea Duggan-Jantzen and Irene Klotz.
  • The helper committee will be made up of Jim Chrisp, Dorwin Anderson, JC Champagne and me.
  • We are establishing an IT committee, headed by Jennifer Jones and me.
  • The board has established a policy review committee, headed by Jennifer Jones.

The IT committee includes some very talented IT people within the GSSCC. Our goal is to modernize GSSCC paperwork and we have the team to do it!

As for the policy review committee, it’s definitely time to take a closer look at our policy manual. This review will likely result in a number of proposed changes - these will be brought to the general membership for approval, according to the guidelines laid out in the GSSCC policy manual.  This committee will be led by Jennifer Jones, as she is translating the entire manual into French. Please contact Jennifer if you would be interested in being on the policy committee.

The board has received a motion from Paul Dethyse, proposing a change to the policy manual. You can read this motion on the GSSCC website by going to the “members only” section under GSSCC Policy Manual. This motion will also be in the next edition of Shepherd Sports. It, too, will be brought before the general membership for consideration, according to the guidelines laid out in the GSSCC policy manual.

The 2015 AGM committee reports will be on the site very soon, as will the AGM minutes.

Take care,

Darin M. Clarke

President, GSSCC.

Judge Annoucement2014-06-20
It is with great pleasure that I can take time to tell fellow GSSCC members about a fantastic accomplishment by our own Mr. Raino Fluegge.  Your GSSCC sponsored Mr. Fluegge to attend a WUSV judges conference in Augsburg Germany.  Mr. Fluegge took a weekend out of his busy schedule to attend this conference during the month of June. Mr. Fluegge is now the first person from North America to have obtained a WUSV Performance Judge license.  CONGRATULATIONS  Raino.

Raino_WUSV

On a further note:  Mr. Fluegge will be the assistant Judge for part “B” for the 2015 Universal World Championship in Modena, Italy.  Then in 2016 he will be the judge for part “B” which will be held in Paderborn, Germany.  Good Luck Raino

New Bylaws2014-05-28
Please review the draft bylaws posted in the Members Section . These new bylaws are to conform to the new Not-For-Profit Act that the Government of Canada has brought in. If there are any changes we wish to make, we will have to make them next year after consulting with the Lawyer to see if the wanted changes do not conflict with the law. Some things you might notice missing but most are in the Act and so do not need to be in the bylaws.

Thanks for your support,

Spring 2014 President Message2014-02-19

Hello Everyone,

I would like to bring your attention to a couple of things:

1) A letter was just sent to all clubs and regions regarding fund raising for Team Canada uniforms and Team Canada sponsorship. We would like every on to pitch in and do what they can to get sponsors. Please talk about it at your clubs. We have some great volunteers working with the marketing to try to make this happen but they need your help.

2) Please send all membership renewals to Peter Haslett as is on the website. The memberships will be prorated coming up so that they will all come due at the same time. This will make the accounting easier, and it will be easier to remember when the memberships are due.

On a lighter note, a new trial season is approaching so I want to wish everyone a great year of training and trialing.

Message from the Board2014-02-11

Hello all,

First the board would like to deal with the FCI  and the stick hits. The WUSV/SV and the RSV 2000 have stated that they will not follow this if the FCI wishes to make this a rule. The GSSCC and UScA will follow the directive set by the WUSV.

Next note the new mailing address on the membership application forms on the website. In the near future the memberships will be prorated for one year to bring all memberships due at the same time. This will allow for easier accounting and making it easier for members to remember when their memberships are due.

Its time to start preparing for spring.

Have fun from the GSSCC board.

Membership Card2013-11-06

Among the tasks that fall under the Trial Secretary , there is one that requires the status of each participant complies with the regulations of GSSCC for this Trial. To do so, the secretary will ask to see your GSSCC membership card and check the expiration date of your membership. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARTICIPANT provide proof of compliance with this rule of the GSSCC .

RESPONSIBILITY OF THE TRIAL SECRETARY is to ensure that all participants adhere to the rules of the trial. ALL competition results will be withheld if one participant does not meet the requirements of the regulations, and the results become valid only when the "abnormal situation" has been " corrected ".

So when the trial secretary asks for your GSSCC member card , it is not because he wants to complicate your life but because he wants to "protect you and all of the participants" against the " missteps ." Imagine that your hard earned IPO 1 is with held simply because they failed to validate compliance with the accession of a participant.

Each competition when I was trial secretary ( me or my wife Hélène Tremblay) in recent years , we met at least one case for various reasons people do not have their membership cards GSSCC . Each time we take "urgent steps " by email to try to validate the member's membership ( Many thanks to Wayne Carnegie , Dave Jantzen and Sylvie Stewart for their help in the last competition ) or propose an alternative solution for authorize the participation of the member

in accordance with the trial rules. So, to all participants, help us to help you . Think of your GSSCC membership card and present it to your trial secretary.

The Canine Athlete - article on sport dogs2013-07-31

The Canine Athlete by Marlene Smith-Schalkwijk

Marlene Smith-Schalkwijk received her DVM from the State University Utrecht Holland in 1976. After 10 years working as a western veterinarian she added Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and herbal Medicine to her tool kit as a veterinarian. In 2000 she added chiropractics to her skills. Doing agility with her own dog, she understands now even better the importance of conformation, breed disposition and the lack of knowledge and understanding of the athlete dog. Now retired from her integrated veterinary practice, Tree of Life Veterinary care in Courtenay BC, she can focus on how to support the canines athletes and their handlers.

In Memory of Diane Carnegie2013-05-06

Hello Everyone

It is with great sadness that I write this message. May 5 the GSSCC lost one of its most treasured members. Diane Carnegie was not only a very good close personal friend to me; she was the heart of the GSSCC. Diane held so many positions in this organization over the years that several others will be needed to take over the workload that she happily volunteered to do.

I was not in the sport long when I met Diane for the first time, back then I didn’t know whether to say hi or run. I soon found out that even though Diane didn’t take any guff from anyone, she would be the first one to jump in and help out. I always knew where I stood, If the email started with Dave or Mr. President I knew I forgot something, if it started with JANTZEN , I knew I screwed up and it took her hours to fix it. Diane put in literally thousands on thousands of hours of her time into making this club what it is today. Diane will be deeply missed by all of us. Our hearts go out to Wayne and the Carnegie family.

Sincerely

Dave Jantzen

President GSSCC

Quebec Region2013-01-20

Hello Everyone,

As of October 1, 2012 the Quebec Region is no longer a pending region. First I would like to offer the boards apologies for not getting this information out in a more timely manner.

We the board of the GSSCC would like to welcome the people in the Quebec region to full status. This means, for one thing that the next time the National Championship moves across the country Quebec will have the opportunity to host the event.

Have a great time training and maybe we will see you at this year’s Championship.

Feedback needed on SV rule2012-12-21

The GSSCC Board of Directors is looking for feedback on the SV rule requiring trial participants to stay until the end of closing ceremonies. Under this rule, leaving prior to this could result in 'poor sportsmanship' being recorded in the participant’s scorebook. A trial starts with the handing in of scorebooks and ends with receiving them back. At local, Regional or National events books, scorebooks will be given back to trial participants after closing ceremonies. The GSSCC follows SV rules unless there is a Canadian rule in place. This is the rule in place at this time. If the majority of members felt we should change/modify this rule, it could be done.

Please take a moment to review the attached.

So, I look forward to your member feedback so that the BOD can have some direction. Please take a few moments and voice your opinion, discuss it with other friends and members and let us know what you think, before people start to plan this coming years events.

Many thanks,
And in the mean time... Merry Christmas!!
Susan Mullins

From the SV / GSSCC Judges

Please be advised that we - your judges for Canada have met and discussed the above noted rule. We agree with the rule and feel it is very necessary that the rule is maintained within and for the GSSCC.

Okanagan Working Dog Club2012-11-14

We have a new club in the Western Region with the Okanagan Working Dog Club recently holding their sanction trial with Judge Lance Collins. We welcome them to the GSSCC and hope to see them at next year's events!

President's Message - Winter 20122012-11-14

Hi everyone

Another year is coming to a close and most of the trials are done. I hope everyone had a great year and achieved the goals that they worked for. I would like to thank team Canada for putting on a good showing, and I hope they all had a good time doing it. Thanks also to Robin for being team captain.

I would like to welcome the Okanagan Working Dog Club to the GSSCC. They recently had their sanction trial and are now a new club. Who knows maybe we will soon see them at the nationals.

Speaking of the nationals, once again we all had a great time. The hosting committee in New Brunswick did a great job as usual. I thank all of you for the hard work you put in. I hope you were not too burnt out after it was all said and done.  There is comments literally around the world about the event being live feed on the internet. Next year the event is in Abbotsford, B.C. It will be a challenge to match this years event.

We have a committee working hard on putting together a program to follow for putting on the Championships. Hopefully this will take some of the work load off of those putting the event on.

We have several committees working hard to make the organization run more smoothly and provide a stable platform on which to operate, so the members can for the most part get on with training their dogs.

In closing I would just like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

See you next year

Dave Jantzen

President's Message - Fall 20122012-08-24

Hi All

We just got back from New Brunswick, and if you were not there, you missed a great time. We got in some sight seeing before the event, and the Haslett’s found us some excellent Lobster  which we had at their place.

The event went off pretty smoothly in spite of some unforeseen problems. I would like to once again thank all those that put in many hours of work to pull it off. All those working at the trial and show did an excellent job. All those doing the actual paperwork and such did a great job for both show and trial.

I think we came away with a few things that we need to address to try and avoid things like only having 2 helpers come to the tryouts and then 1 gets injured after only a few dogs. No one could have seen that coming, but when it did, many people jumped into action and got some other helpers there. Patrick had to pick up the slack by himself until the reinforcements arrived.   Once again great job!!!

One other person that I would like to thank is Rachel Haslett, not only for putting up with us at their home, but for volunteering to take the minutes at the AGM. If you have ever tried writing as someone is speaking, you know how hard it is.

Hope to see you at the next one in BC.

Update on new rules2012-07-15
The new rules state that should a participant of a trial leave prior to the closing ceremonies of said trial, they will be subject to being disqualified from said trial.

After further discussion regarding the above rule we the National Board have agreed that the above noted new rule will not be enforced at the 2012 GSSCC National Championship.  The Board will be discussing the validity of this rule for GSSCC trials due to issues such as travel.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation with this matter.

President's Message - Summer 20122012-05-24

Hello Everyone

I hope everyone had a great spring and is all set for this year’s Championship and Show. I for one am looking forward to some great sight seeing in New Brunswick.

On another note, it is that time again. The ballots have been sent out and it is time for you to do your thing and get them back to us. Please exercise your right to vote as this is the only way that things get changed. Please answer the survey questions as well.

For those of you that look at the website from time to time, you will notice in the members section is the Shepherd Sports magazine. So now you can look at your paper copy, or if you are on the road and your magazine is at home, you can check it out online. This could come in handy if you are out of town and need contact info from the magazine.

I have been in contact with the UScA and we have come to an agreement  whereby you can, as a GSSCC member, submit your dogs x-rays for SV certification thru the UScA office. Many of us are UScA members anyway, but if you are not, then here is another option. The info sheet on how to do this is now in the document section of our website.

I wish everyone V scores in the trial and VA in the show. Get set for a great event and I will see you there.

For the Sport,

Dave Jantzen

Hip and Elbow Certification2012-05-23

For submitting your dogs Hip/Elbow X-Rays to the SV for an A Stamp, you can now go through the United Schutzhund clubs of America using your GSSCC membership. See the instruction sheet in the official documents on our website.

Effective immediately there are new rules from the WUSV for the team for the world championships - this is not the same for the universal team.

WUSV Mandatory as of 2012, all competitors must have a minimum of 80 points in each phase, and a minimum of 250 points total to enter.

Thanks,
Dave Jantzen

Requirement for show entry2012-04-19

For show entries, a certified three (3) generation pedigree is only required for the working classes (male and female) and not for any of the other classes. The infomation we were provided earlier was in error.

Thanks,
Dave Jantzen

Update to new rules2012-03-28

It has come to the attention of our Judges committee that a change in the IPO 2 protection routine has slipped through.  While reviewing the new SV rule book it has come to our attention that the IPO 2 protection routine has added a second side transport.

Now - IPO 2 has a side transport after the attack out of the back transport and before the team heads up the field for the Long Bite.

IPO 2 is exactly the same as IPO 3 except in two areas:
   1. IPO 2 has a four blind search – IPO 3 has six to search
   2. IPO 2 does not have a re-attack after the long bite.

Please do not hesitate contact me if you should have any questions regarding the above notice.

Good luck with your training.

Doug Deacon

Breed Survey Protection2012-03-27

Below is a recap of the new breed survey protection rules:

For the evaluation of the protection phase, a cognitively trained Koermeister is used. Helpers for the event will be GSSCC certified helpers.

Execution:

I.    Attack

1. The handler reports to the Koermeister with his dog on leash.

2. On direction of the Koermeister, the dog handler goes into basic heel position at a marked spot approx. 25 meters before the blind, and removes the leash from his dog.

3. The leash is to be draped around, or put in pocket.

4. On direction of the Koermeister, the handler proceeds in the direction of the blind with his dog off leash.

5. The dog is to heel close to the handler up to a marked spot 7 meters before the blind. Repeated verbal commands are permitted; touching the dog is not permitted.  When the handler reaches this spot with his dog, on direction of the Koermeister, the helper comes out of the blind threatening and vocal towards the handler and dog. If the dog breaks before the marked spot, no attack on the helper is permitted.  The handler now has two additional opportunities to free-heel with his dog to the 7 meter marking. If the dog cannot be free-heeled to the 7 meter marking, protection is stopped due to lacking obedience. In the case, after the documents have been returned to the owner, the dog can be presented for a new    survey in the same year.  A presentation due to insufficient obedience can only be attempted three times.

6. The dog must immediately, confidently and forcefully defend with a firm, full grip.

7. When the dog has gripped, he receives two hits with the soft stick on hindquarter, sides or withers.

8. During the defence of the attack verbal encouragement by the handler is permitted.

9. On direction of the Koermeister, the helper stops the attack and stands still.

10. The dog is to release on his own, or on the command “out”, and to guard the helper.

11. The handler receives direction from the Koermeister to approach his dog.

12. He puts the leash on his dog and is directed by the Koermeister to step into a specific blind.

II.   Defence of Attack with Guarding

1. The handler is called out of the blind by the Koermeister and proceeds to the indicated position (middle line).

2. The leash is removed, and the dog is held by the collar.

3. The dog is to remain in this position until he is sent, with the command “voran”, to defend the attack.

4. On direction of the Koermeister, the helper leaves the blind he was sent to by the Koermeister, approx. 70 to 80 paces from the handler, and crosses the field with a normal gait.

5. The handler verbally calls to him stop.

6. The helper ignores the call and frontally attacks the handler and dog.

7. Immediately upon the attack, the Koermeister indicates to defend the attack.

8. The handler immediately sends his dog with “voran”, and remains standing.

9. The dog is to defend the attack with intensity, forcefully, and with a firm, full, confident grip.

10. When the dog has gripped, the helper is to briefly pressure the dog – without stick hits – and on direction of the Koermeister, stop the resistance.

11. Upon this, the dog is to release on his own, or on the command “out” and guard the helper.

12. On direction of the Koermeister, the handler directly approaches his dog in a normal gait and puts him on leash.

13. The handler reports to the Koermeister with his dog on leash and leaves the field.

III. Identification

On reporting at completion, a tattoo (i.e. chip number) control is done by the Koermeister or an SV-judge designated by him.

IV. Evaluation

1. Release

1.1 On conclusion of the attack, the dog is to release on his own.

1.2 The handler can give the first verbal command “out” on his own, after an appropriate time period.

1.3 If the dog does not release after the first command, the handler receives direction from the Koermeister for two more possible verbal commands.

1.4 On giving the verbal command “out”, the handler is to remain standing calmly without influencing the dog.

1.5 If the name of the dog is to be used, this will be evaluated as an out-command.

1.6 If the dog releases on his own as the handler approaches, this can still be evaluated as an ‘out’.  However, the handler must be a minimum of 5 paces away from the dog.

1.7 If the dog releases on his own or on command during the Attack and the Defence, he receives the additional comment “releases”.

1.8 If he does not release – even only in one instance – he receives the comment “does not release”.  In this case, the survey cannot be completed.  The dog can then be presented again at another survey during the same year, upon the documentation being returned to the owner.  Presentation because of  ‘no out’ can only be attempted three times in a calendar year.  Overall, only three attempts for survey can be made in a calendar year, regardless whether due to lacking obedience or no out.

1.9 During the entire protection phase, the Koermeister remains near the handler and intensively observes the behaviour of dog and handler until the final pick-up.

2. Evaluation of Drive, Self Confidence and Ability to withstand pressure

2.1 The overall evaluation of the protection is given as “pronounced”, “present”, or “insufficient”.

2.2 Pronounced: Self confident, intense, determined and secure grip and hold, no negative reactions during stick hits, close and attentive watching during the guarding phases.

2.3 Present: Limitations in self confidence, determination, with grip and stick hits, as well as in the guarding phases.

2.4 Insufficient: Lacking self confidence, strong limitations regarding ability to withstand pressure, and disinterest in helper.

In Memoriam Winfried Uhl2012-02-06

winfried1Winfried Uhl
October 11, 1954 - January 16, 2012

The sport lost a great friend and supporter due to a sudden brain aneurysm.  A number of you will remember the “Big Guy”, as he was a frequent visitor to our national event for many years, and often reminisced of those trips – be it to Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto or St. John.

He was Vice President of his local OG Selb club in northern Bavaria, and actively competed with his dog, Phil vom Welzbachtal, being successful in local as well as regional competitions.  Last year he acquired a new young dog, a son of Phil, and was actively enjoying the puppy stages and temperament of his young dog, looking forward to competing with him.

A picture below shows him as proud recipient of the silver service award (Verdienstspange) of the SV, being presented to him in 2007 by Dieter Ortlauf.

We were looking forward to spending time with him this fall, as the Bundessiegerprüfung this year is being held in Bayreuth, northern Bavaria, and Winfried was planning to volunteer with the organization of the event, but alas … it was not to be.

Winfried was always a loyal and trusted friend, and would go out of his way to help anyone.  We will sure miss him! Sincere condolences to his dear mom.

Rest in peace, my dear friend!

A Message from the President2011-09-19

Hi All,

On the Friday of the September long weekend, Andrea and Myself flew to Ontario. We spent the first few days visiting. We would like to thank the Saugeen Schutzhund club and the Durham Schutzhund club for their hospitality. Bev at the Durham club is probably the best baker in Ontario. Thanks also to Angie and Harold for giving us a place to stay.

We then drove down to Niagara. We went out to the event grounds, and found that setup was well under way. With only a couple of what I would call minor hiccups, which If you have planned any events you know these are unavoidable, the hosting committee took them in stride and put on a fantastic event. I think everyone had a great time, I know I did. I think this will be an event that the judges will be talking about for a while as well. They were treated with the courtesy and respect that they deserved, and they did a great job. Thanks to  Rinus Bastiaansen, Margit van Dorssen, Dave Grant, Jim Crisp, and Doug Deacon for helping to make this event a success.   For the first time in a while, I did not hear any major complaints from trial or show people about the way things went. I hope that we can live up to this year’s event in the future.  Thanks to Craig and Renee and the Niagara Hundesport/Police Dog training Club for doing a great job. This will be an event to remember. And yes the helicopter ride was a great end to the event.  I would advise anyone that goes to the Niagara area to take advantage of the Great View of the area that you get from Niagara Helicopters. Maybe Craig and Renee will have time to try it out themselves now that the work is done.

Congratulations to Team Canada and this year’s Universal team.

Hope you had a great time.
Dave

Hello Team Canada 20112011-09-14

On behalf of the National Board of the GSSCC we want to extend our congratulations to each of you.  We know how hard you have worked in the past twelve months to prepare your dog and yourself to become a member of TEAM CANADA 2011.  We want to wish each of you the best of luck and we know you will be wonderful ambassadors for not only the GSSCC but also for our country.

If we may suggest the following – enjoy the experience, try to relax and have fun as a TEAM.  Each of you is there because of your individual work ethic, but do keep in mind you are now with a TEAM so work not only for yourself but also for your TEAM mates.

We also want to extend a special thank you to JP for stepping up to the plate at the eleventh hour and not under the best of circumstances.  Dan, Raino, Nancy, Robin and Sylvie please look after our good friend JP.

Good luck.

Remembering SV Judge Michael Madacsi 2011-07-28

It is with regret that we learned of the passing of SV performance judge Michael Madacsi on July 16th, 2011. Mischka (as he was more fondly known) became a member of the SV in 1957, SV judge 1970, had judged many times in Canada and the USA including the GSSCC SchH3 Championships. Michael was predeceased by his wife Frieda and is survived by his daughter Petra, son-in-law Jeurgen Reinhardt and two grandchildren Marco and Patric and the many friends he made in Canada.

Michael had bred a few litters under the kennel name ‘Zigeunerklause’ and placed 20th at the 1980 BSP with Jonny von der Zigeunerklause.

World Universal Competition2011-07-11

Hello everyone.

The World Universal Competition in Austria is now over. Raino got V12 in the show and had 92 in tracking, 92 in obedience and would have had 97 in protection until there was a technical problem with the last out. His dog’s hearing aid battery went dead and so the dog did not hear the out command. Were it not for this little glitch he would have won the championship.

I would like to congratulate Raino on an excellent performance. He did not quite get the result he had hoped for this time but there is always next year.

Dogs, like Kids frequently choose the worst times to exercise their independence.

Have a great Summer.

UPDATE - Insurance Coverage2011-06-07
Further correspondence with our insurance carrier BFL Canada Risk & insurance Inc. has confirmed the following: All GSSCC clubs and members are covered with Liability insurance for accidents that may happen to a spectator (third parties) while at a GSSCC Club during any sanctioned event throughout the year. This includes regular training.

Certificates of insurance are requested by clubs requiring proof of insurance for a venue/ land owner etc. only. They are not required by BFL Canada Risk & Insurance Inc. to hold an event.

This is a reminder to all Regions and Clubs that there is a need to have all members understand the “umbrella” of Sanctioned Training in a club environment and location in relation to Liability coverage.

The General Liability Insurance policy and wordings is available by request  through your National and/ or Regional director . Be aware the file is large: 256 and 78 KB.

New Rules 20122011-06-02

To all GSSCC Members:

RE: New Rules 2012

I want to inform our members about the actions that have been taken and what will be taken regarding the new rules coming into effect on January 1st 2012. First and foremost the title "Schutzhund" will no longer exist and our Schutzhund titles will be referred to as IPO 1, 11 and 111.

Your judge's committee is taking the approach of reviewing and then discussing each of the new rules.  This will be done in conjunction with one of the committee members attending a judges seminar in the United States.  Schutzhund USA is having a seminar with a gentlemen from Austria who was on the new rules committee and he is therefore fully aware of all the changes.

Once these tasks have been completed your judge's committee hopes to have a full report to the members of the GSSCC on or before the 2011 National Championship.  We will also be putting the rules on the GSSCC web site as soon as we confirm that the English version is correct.

On behalf of your Judge's committee.

USA Sieger Show 20112011-05-23

Hi Everyone,

I just thought I would give you an update on some show stats. We were at the USA Sieger Show in Dallas, Texas from April 29th to May 1st. Our GSSCC members did quite well and I would like to congratulate these members on a job well done.

usasieger2011Working Class Male - VA1 Utah v Bullinger

I know this is a big honour for Tracy. For those of you who don’t keep up with the show information, this means Tracy and Utah won the show. Tracy also placed VA3 with her female Ira v Bullinger and V4 with Beate v Bullinger. Tracy had other dogs in various classes that also did well, but these two dogs are the top.

Other members who placed were:

V7 - Konie Feetback
Owner: Guy Palanuik

V10 - Maxx v Bullinger
Owners: Randy and Ruby Panaich

V11 - Griff v TeMar
Owner: Karen Sinclair
Karen also received one of the trophies for her dog’s bite work.

Congratulations to all of you. I know how much work goes into the showing of your dogs.

President's Message - Summer 20112011-05-05

Hello  Everyone

Once again we find the nationals coming up very fast. I hope all of you have had the training you wanted to help you get there. I would like to thank all of the people that have stepped up to help us get things done, and there have been many. This includes the others on the GSSCC board. They have given up a lot of their time to the job, as we meet on Skype every week. I would like to also thank all the regional directors for taking the time to be involved in the meetings 1 time every month so we can keep up on what’s happening across the country.

These meetings have been working very well, and have brought many new ideas. Some of these ideas have been put to use on the National website. If you haven’t been on it for a long time you should check it out. The web team has been doing a great job. Once again if you have articles that you would like on the website, in French or English please send them in. We always need new info to keep the site current.

We are moving ahead with the introduction of the new RH title. This new title has its basis in Rescue Work. Information and rules on this new sport title will be available soon. This is an exciting new title that you can do with your dog without the protection phase of schutzhund. This should work for some of the club members that have either retired their dog from schutzhund, or possibly have a dog that is a great tracker and obedience dog, but is not great at the protection work. We will keep you informed on this title as the information is available.

Hope to see you in Niagara.

For the sport
Dave Jantzen

President's Message - Spring 20112011-02-18

Hello Everyone,

Another year is upon us. For us out west we can continue with training as we don’t really have winter. I wish everyone good luck for the upcoming trial season.

The GSSCC board once again will have some proposed changes to vote on in the spring, please exercise your right to vote on them.

If you have been on the website lately you will likely notice some big changes. Our new web team has had some great ideas and is working very hard. The French side of the site is being built and material is being added to it. Translating is a lengthy process so I thank you in advance for your patience. If you want to place articles on the site and can produce them in both languages it would be a great help. I would like to thank Fred and Anick, and their helpers, for the translations I know this takes many hours to make sure that the ideas make sense after the translation.

We have now added Sarah Barnes, Cathie Pierson and Jamie-Lynn Pitts to our Web Team, so if they contact you for information please help them out. Without a steady flow of information the website can’t be kept current. I would like to thank Anthony Hartelaub for his years of work on the website and for continuing to help with the transition period for Sarah to take on the position. Thank you to everyone that has worked hard to make this organization move forward.

For The Sport,
Dave Jantzen
President GSSCC

Year End President's Message 2010-11-15
DaveJantzen.jpgHI All

With the German Shepherd Championships and Sieger Show over and the WUSV Championship as well, we can all get back to training before winter is upon us.

Congratulations to Team Canada, Gabi, Lance, Raino, Robin and Ros, who all performed in a professional and sportsmanlike manner throughout the event. There will be no rest for the wicked, because Gabi, Lance and Raino will now have to start preparing for the WUSV World Universal in June 2011.

THE GSSCC WELCOMES A NEW REGION
We would like to let everyone know that the GSSCC Quebec Region was formed as of October 1st, 2010. There will be an update with contact information on the website and in Shepherd Sports. So you now have one more regional event to choose from and we have one more region to host the national Championship. The board wishes all the luck to the new Regional board and the clubs in Quebec.

On a sad note, GSSCC/SV judge Rudy Mietzner has passed away. Rudy was a judge for a long time and will be missed by all. He judged many trials in Canada and the USA and was always willing to help out if you needed it. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the GSSCC executive.
