| In Memory of Diane Carnegie | 2013-05-06 |
Hello Everyone
It is with great sadness that I write this message. May 5 the GSSCC lost one of its most treasured members. Diane Carnegie was not only a very good close personal friend to me; she was the heart of the GSSCC. Diane held so many positions in this organization over the years that several others will be needed to take over the workload that she happily volunteered to do.
I was not in the sport long when I met Diane for the first time, back then I didn’t know whether to say hi or run. I soon found out that even though Diane didn’t take any guff from anyone, she would be the first one to jump in and help out. I always knew where I stood, If the email started with Dave or Mr. President I knew I forgot something, if it started with JANTZEN , I knew I screwed up and it took her hours to fix it. Diane put in literally thousands on thousands of hours of her time into making this club what it is today. Diane will be deeply missed by all of us. Our hearts go out to Wayne and the Carnegie family.
Sincerely
Dave Jantzen

| National Helper Seminars 2013 | 2013-04-22 |
To all GSSCC members, helpers and teaching helpers:
The Helper Committee is proud to announce a new helper selection process for the Canadian German Shepherd Dog Championships.
Following talks after the 2012 Canadian Championships and considering how other countries select their championship helpers, the Helper Committee along with the GSSCC Executive have decided that there will no longer be try-outs at the Canadian Championships.
Helpers will be selected in advance from two National Helper seminars, one in the West/Prairies group and one in the Ontario/Quebec/East group.
The Helper Committee invites you to attend these two National Helper seminars. Your presence is important, as helpers, handlers, and members at large.
The Helper Program Director and the Head Judge will make the decision on the selection for the Canadian Championships helpers, by supervising both events. All helpers performances will be videotaped and at the conclusion of the second National seminar, three helpers will be selected: front half, back half and an alternate (who will do the Sieger Show bite work).
The flight to the Championships and per diem will be paid for all three selected helpers.
In addition to selecting the current year’s championship helpers, these seminars will allow all helpers to extend, upgrade or obtain their certification level.
The seminars will be organized by the Helper Director and taught by Teaching Helpers.
The seminars will be free of charge for all participants.
By gathering as many helpers as possible in the same training and selection event, it is also a great opportunity for handlers to expose their dogs to various helpers, including the ones that might be selected to work the championships.
It will also be an ideal platform to meet, exchange ideas and for the helper committee to gather feedback from everyone.
The first seminar will be held in French and English in St. Hyacinthe (near Montreal) on May 31-June 2, 2013.
Contact Darin Clarke darin.clarke@saintjohn.ca
The second seminar will be held near Langley on June 29-30, 2013.
Contact Ralph Gilby ralphgilby@telus.net
The helper committee is excited about the National Helper seminars and see it as an excellent learning environment and experience for everyone.
Please pass this along to any GSSCC member.
We encourage all handlers/dogs to attend, as the success of the seminars relies on the number of dogs participating. By improving helper quality it will improve the entire sport!!
If you have any questions please contact helper director Darin Clarke- darin.clarke@saintjohn.ca or 506-977-4949.

| Feedback needed on SV rule | 2012-12-21 |
The GSSCC Board of Directors is looking for feedback on the SV rule requiring trial participants to stay until the end of closing ceremonies. Under this rule, leaving prior to this could result in 'poor sportsmanship' being recorded in the participant’s scorebook. A trial starts with the handing in of scorebooks and ends with receiving them back. At local, Regional or National events books, scorebooks will be given back to trial participants after closing ceremonies. The GSSCC follows SV rules unless there is a Canadian rule in place. This is the rule in place at this time. If the majority of members felt we should change/modify this rule, it could be done.
Please take a moment to review the attached.
So, I look forward to your member feedback so that the BOD can have some direction. Please take a few moments and voice your opinion, discuss it with other friends and members and let us know what you think, before people start to plan this coming years events.
Many thanks,
And in the mean time... Merry Christmas!!
Susan Mullins
From the SV / GSSCC Judges
Please be advised that we - your judges for Canada have met and discussed the above noted rule. We agree with the rule and feel it is very necessary that the rule is maintained within and for the GSSCC.

| President's Message - Winter 2012 | 2012-11-14 |
Hi everyone
Another year is coming to a close and most of the trials are done. I hope everyone had a great year and achieved the goals that they worked for. I would like to thank team Canada for putting on a good showing, and I hope they all had a good time doing it. Thanks also to Robin for being team captain.
I would like to welcome the Okanagan Working Dog Club to the GSSCC. They recently had their sanction trial and are now a new club. Who knows maybe we will soon see them at the nationals.
Speaking of the nationals, once again we all had a great time. The hosting committee in New Brunswick did a great job as usual. I thank all of you for the hard work you put in. I hope you were not too burnt out after it was all said and done. There is comments literally around the world about the event being live feed on the internet. Next year the event is in Abbotsford, B.C. It will be a challenge to match this years event.
We have a committee working hard on putting together a program to follow for putting on the Championships. Hopefully this will take some of the work load off of those putting the event on.
We have several committees working hard to make the organization run more smoothly and provide a stable platform on which to operate, so the members can for the most part get on with training their dogs.
In closing I would just like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
See you next year

| President's Message - Fall 2012 | 2012-08-24 |
Hi All
We just got back from New Brunswick, and if you were not there, you missed a great time. We got in some sight seeing before the event, and the Haslett’s found us some excellent Lobster which we had at their place.
The event went off pretty smoothly in spite of some unforeseen problems. I would like to once again thank all those that put in many hours of work to pull it off. All those working at the trial and show did an excellent job. All those doing the actual paperwork and such did a great job for both show and trial.
I think we came away with a few things that we need to address to try and avoid things like only having 2 helpers come to the tryouts and then 1 gets injured after only a few dogs. No one could have seen that coming, but when it did, many people jumped into action and got some other helpers there. Patrick had to pick up the slack by himself until the reinforcements arrived. Once again great job!!!
One other person that I would like to thank is Rachel Haslett, not only for putting up with us at their home, but for volunteering to take the minutes at the AGM. If you have ever tried writing as someone is speaking, you know how hard it is.
Hope to see you at the next one in BC.

Hello Everyone
I hope everyone had a great spring and is all set for this year’s Championship and Show. I for one am looking forward to some great sight seeing in New Brunswick.
On another note, it is that time again. The ballots have been sent out and it is time for you to do your thing and get them back to us. Please exercise your right to vote as this is the only way that things get changed. Please answer the survey questions as well.
For those of you that look at the website from time to time, you will notice in the members section is the Shepherd Sports magazine. So now you can look at your paper copy, or if you are on the road and your magazine is at home, you can check it out online. This could come in handy if you are out of town and need contact info from the magazine.
I have been in contact with the UScA and we have come to an agreement whereby you can, as a GSSCC member, submit your dogs x-rays for SV certification thru the UScA office. Many of us are UScA members anyway, but if you are not, then here is another option. The info sheet on how to do this is now in the document section of our website.
I wish everyone V scores in the trial and VA in the show. Get set for a great event and I will see you there.
For the Sport,
Dave Jantzen

It has come to the attention of our Judges committee that a change in the IPO 2 protection routine has slipped through. While reviewing the new SV rule book it has come to our attention that the IPO 2 protection routine has added a second side transport.
Now - IPO 2 has a side transport after the attack out of the back transport and before the team heads up the field for the Long Bite.
IPO 2 is exactly the same as IPO 3 except in two areas:
1. IPO 2 has a four blind search – IPO 3 has six to search
2. IPO 2 does not have a re-attack after the long bite.
Please do not hesitate contact me if you should have any questions regarding the above notice.
Good luck with your training.

| Breed Survey Protection | 2012-03-27 |
Below is a recap of the new breed survey protection rules:
For the evaluation of the protection phase, a cognitively trained Koermeister is used. Helpers for the event will be GSSCC certified helpers.
Execution:
I. Attack
1. The handler reports to the Koermeister with his dog on leash.
2. On direction of the Koermeister, the dog handler goes into basic heel position at a marked spot approx. 25 meters before the blind, and removes the leash from his dog.
3. The leash is to be draped around, or put in pocket.
4. On direction of the Koermeister, the handler proceeds in the direction of the blind with his dog off leash.
5. The dog is to heel close to the handler up to a marked spot 7 meters before the blind. Repeated verbal commands are permitted; touching the dog is not permitted. When the handler reaches this spot with his dog, on direction of the Koermeister, the helper comes out of the blind threatening and vocal towards the handler and dog. If the dog breaks before the marked spot, no attack on the helper is permitted. The handler now has two additional opportunities to free-heel with his dog to the 7 meter marking. If the dog cannot be free-heeled to the 7 meter marking, protection is stopped due to lacking obedience. In the case, after the documents have been returned to the owner, the dog can be presented for a new survey in the same year. A presentation due to insufficient obedience can only be attempted three times.
6. The dog must immediately, confidently and forcefully defend with a firm, full grip.
7. When the dog has gripped, he receives two hits with the soft stick on hindquarter, sides or withers.
8. During the defence of the attack verbal encouragement by the handler is permitted.
9. On direction of the Koermeister, the helper stops the attack and stands still.
10. The dog is to release on his own, or on the command “out”, and to guard the helper.
11. The handler receives direction from the Koermeister to approach his dog.
12. He puts the leash on his dog and is directed by the Koermeister to step into a specific blind.
II. Defence of Attack with Guarding
1. The handler is called out of the blind by the Koermeister and proceeds to the indicated position (middle line).
2. The leash is removed, and the dog is held by the collar.
3. The dog is to remain in this position until he is sent, with the command “voran”, to defend the attack.
4. On direction of the Koermeister, the helper leaves the blind he was sent to by the Koermeister, approx. 70 to 80 paces from the handler, and crosses the field with a normal gait.
5. The handler verbally calls to him stop.
6. The helper ignores the call and frontally attacks the handler and dog.
7. Immediately upon the attack, the Koermeister indicates to defend the attack.
8. The handler immediately sends his dog with “voran”, and remains standing.
9. The dog is to defend the attack with intensity, forcefully, and with a firm, full, confident grip.
10. When the dog has gripped, the helper is to briefly pressure the dog – without stick hits – and on direction of the Koermeister, stop the resistance.
11. Upon this, the dog is to release on his own, or on the command “out” and guard the helper.
12. On direction of the Koermeister, the handler directly approaches his dog in a normal gait and puts him on leash.
13. The handler reports to the Koermeister with his dog on leash and leaves the field.
III. Identification
On reporting at completion, a tattoo (i.e. chip number) control is done by the Koermeister or an SV-judge designated by him.
IV. Evaluation
1. Release
1.1 On conclusion of the attack, the dog is to release on his own.
1.2 The handler can give the first verbal command “out” on his own, after an appropriate time period.
1.3 If the dog does not release after the first command, the handler receives direction from the Koermeister for two more possible verbal commands.
1.4 On giving the verbal command “out”, the handler is to remain standing calmly without influencing the dog.
1.5 If the name of the dog is to be used, this will be evaluated as an out-command.
1.6 If the dog releases on his own as the handler approaches, this can still be evaluated as an ‘out’. However, the handler must be a minimum of 5 paces away from the dog.
1.7 If the dog releases on his own or on command during the Attack and the Defence, he receives the additional comment “releases”.
1.8 If he does not release – even only in one instance – he receives the comment “does not release”. In this case, the survey cannot be completed. The dog can then be presented again at another survey during the same year, upon the documentation being returned to the owner. Presentation because of ‘no out’ can only be attempted three times in a calendar year. Overall, only three attempts for survey can be made in a calendar year, regardless whether due to lacking obedience or no out.
1.9 During the entire protection phase, the Koermeister remains near the handler and intensively observes the behaviour of dog and handler until the final pick-up.
2. Evaluation of Drive, Self Confidence and Ability to withstand pressure
2.1 The overall evaluation of the protection is given as “pronounced”, “present”, or “insufficient”.
2.2 Pronounced: Self confident, intense, determined and secure grip and hold, no negative reactions during stick hits, close and attentive watching during the guarding phases.
2.3 Present: Limitations in self confidence, determination, with grip and stick hits, as well as in the guarding phases.
2.4 Insufficient: Lacking self confidence, strong limitations regarding ability to withstand pressure, and disinterest in helper.

Winfried Uhl
October 11, 1954 - January 16, 2012
The sport lost a great friend and supporter due to a sudden brain aneurysm. A number of you will remember the “Big Guy”, as he was a frequent visitor to our national event for many years, and often reminisced of those trips – be it to Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto or St. John.
He was Vice President of his local OG Selb club in northern Bavaria, and actively competed with his dog, Phil vom Welzbachtal, being successful in local as well as regional competitions. Last year he acquired a new young dog, a son of Phil, and was actively enjoying the puppy stages and temperament of his young dog, looking forward to competing with him.
A picture below shows him as proud recipient of the silver service award (Verdienstspange) of the SV, being presented to him in 2007 by Dieter Ortlauf.
We were looking forward to spending time with him this fall, as the Bundessiegerprüfung this year is being held in Bayreuth, northern Bavaria, and Winfried was planning to volunteer with the organization of the event, but alas … it was not to be.
Winfried was always a loyal and trusted friend, and would go out of his way to help anyone. We will sure miss him! Sincere condolences to his dear mom.
Rest in peace, my dear friend!

Hi All,
On the Friday of the September long weekend, Andrea and Myself flew to Ontario. We spent the first few days visiting. We would like to thank the Saugeen Schutzhund club and the Durham Schutzhund club for their hospitality. Bev at the Durham club is probably the best baker in Ontario. Thanks also to Angie and Harold for giving us a place to stay.
We then drove down to Niagara. We went out to the event grounds, and found that setup was well under way. With only a couple of what I would call minor hiccups, which If you have planned any events you know these are unavoidable, the hosting committee took them in stride and put on a fantastic event. I think everyone had a great time, I know I did. I think this will be an event that the judges will be talking about for a while as well. They were treated with the courtesy and respect that they deserved, and they did a great job. Thanks to Rinus Bastiaansen, Margit van Dorssen, Dave Grant, Jim Crisp, and Doug Deacon for helping to make this event a success. For the first time in a while, I did not hear any major complaints from trial or show people about the way things went. I hope that we can live up to this year’s event in the future. Thanks to Craig and Renee and the Niagara Hundesport/Police Dog training Club for doing a great job. This will be an event to remember. And yes the helicopter ride was a great end to the event. I would advise anyone that goes to the Niagara area to take advantage of the Great View of the area that you get from Niagara Helicopters. Maybe Craig and Renee will have time to try it out themselves now that the work is done.
Congratulations to Team Canada and this year’s Universal team.
Hope you had a great time.

On behalf of the National Board of the GSSCC we want to extend our congratulations to each of you. We know how hard you have worked in the past twelve months to prepare your dog and yourself to become a member of TEAM CANADA 2011. We want to wish each of you the best of luck and we know you will be wonderful ambassadors for not only the GSSCC but also for our country.
If we may suggest the following – enjoy the experience, try to relax and have fun as a TEAM. Each of you is there because of your individual work ethic, but do keep in mind you are now with a TEAM so work not only for yourself but also for your TEAM mates.
We also want to extend a special thank you to JP for stepping up to the plate at the eleventh hour and not under the best of circumstances. Dan, Raino, Nancy, Robin and Sylvie please look after our good friend JP.
Good luck.

| Remembering SV Judge Michael Madacsi | 2011-07-28 |
It is with regret that we learned of the passing of SV performance judge Michael Madacsi on July 16th, 2011. Mischka (as he was more fondly known) became a member of the SV in 1957, SV judge 1970, had judged many times in Canada and the USA including the GSSCC SchH3 Championships. Michael was predeceased by his wife Frieda and is survived by his daughter Petra, son-in-law Jeurgen Reinhardt and two grandchildren Marco and Patric and the many friends he made in Canada.
Michael had bred a few litters under the kennel name ‘Zigeunerklause’ and placed 20th at the 1980 BSP with Jonny von der Zigeunerklause.
The following were winners of the Canadian German Shepherd Dog SchH3 Championships with Herr Madacsi judging.
1983 Frank Mensing with Ulk vom Bungalow 97-93-96= 286
1990 John Lundin with Derry vom Bergblick 98-96-98= 292
1992 Lance Collins with Dune vom Bergblick 96-91-96= 283
A full tribute to Mischka will be in the next issue of Shepherd Sports.
| Request Documents in Word Format | 2011-07-20 |
We are always looking for ways to improve and make things easier! With that in mind, the Event Booking Request and the Non-GSSCC Judge Request have been made available in Word format to allow for completion on your computer. The form still needs to be printed, signed and either mailed or scanned and emailed to your Regional Trial Director.
The new formats can be found in the Official Documents section. | World Universal Competition | 2011-07-11 |
Hello everyone.
The World Universal Competition in Austria is now over. Raino got V12 in the show and had 92 in tracking, 92 in obedience and would have had 97 in protection until there was a technical problem with the last out. His dog’s hearing aid battery went dead and so the dog did not hear the out command. Were it not for this little glitch he would have won the championship.
I would like to congratulate Raino on an excellent performance. He did not quite get the result he had hoped for this time but there is always next year.
Dogs, like Kids frequently choose the worst times to exercise their independence.
Have a great Summer.

| UPDATE - Insurance Coverage | 2011-06-07 |
Further correspondence with our insurance carrier BFL Canada Risk & insurance Inc. has confirmed the following: All GSSCC clubs and members are covered with Liability insurance for accidents that may happen to a spectator (third parties) while at a GSSCC Club during any sanctioned event throughout the year. This includes regular training.
Certificates of insurance are requested by clubs requiring proof of insurance for a venue/ land owner etc. only. They are not required by BFL Canada Risk & Insurance Inc. to hold an event.
This is a reminder to all Regions and Clubs that there is a need to have all members understand the “umbrella” of Sanctioned Training in a club environment and location in relation to Liability coverage.
The General Liability Insurance policy and wordings is available by request through your National and/ or Regional director . Be aware the file is large: 256 and 78 KB.

To all GSSCC Members:
RE: New Rules 2012
I want to inform our members about the actions that have been taken and what will be taken regarding the new rules coming into effect on January 1st 2012. First and foremost the title "Schutzhund" will no longer exist and our Schutzhund titles will be referred to as IPO 1, 11 and 111.
Your judge's committee is taking the approach of reviewing and then discussing each of the new rules. This will be done in conjunction with one of the committee members attending a judges seminar in the United States. Schutzhund USA is having a seminar with a gentlemen from Austria who was on the new rules committee and he is therefore fully aware of all the changes.
Once these tasks have been completed your judge's committee hopes to have a full report to the members of the GSSCC on or before the 2011 National Championship. We will also be putting the rules on the GSSCC web site as soon as we confirm that the English version is correct.
On behalf of your Judge's committee.

| USA Sieger Show 2011 | 2011-05-23 |
Hi Everyone,
I just thought I would give you an update on some show stats. We were at the USA Sieger Show in Dallas, Texas from April 29th to May 1st. Our GSSCC members did quite well and I would like to congratulate these members on a job well done.
Working Class Male - VA1 Utah v Bullinger
Owner: Tracy Bullinger
I know this is a big honour for Tracy. For those of you who don’t keep up with the show information, this means Tracy and Utah won the show. Tracy also placed VA3 with her female Ira v Bullinger and V4 with Beate v Bullinger. Tracy had other dogs in various classes that also did well, but these two dogs are the top.
Other members who placed were:
V7 - Konie Feetback
Owner: Guy Palanuik
V10 - Maxx v Bullinger
Owners: Randy and Ruby Panaich
V11 - Griff v TeMar
Owner: Karen Sinclair
Karen also received one of the trophies for her dog’s bite work.
Congratulations to all of you. I know how much work goes into the showing of your dogs.
Have a great summer

| President's Message - Summer 2011 | 2011-05-05 |
Hello Everyone
Once again we find the nationals coming up very fast. I hope all of you have had the training you wanted to help you get there. I would like to thank all of the people that have stepped up to help us get things done, and there have been many. This includes the others on the GSSCC board. They have given up a lot of their time to the job, as we meet on Skype every week. I would like to also thank all the regional directors for taking the time to be involved in the meetings 1 time every month so we can keep up on what’s happening across the country.
These meetings have been working very well, and have brought many new ideas. Some of these ideas have been put to use on the National website. If you haven’t been on it for a long time you should check it out. The web team has been doing a great job. Once again if you have articles that you would like on the website, in French or English please send them in. We always need new info to keep the site current.
We are moving ahead with the introduction of the new RH title. This new title has its basis in Rescue Work. Information and rules on this new sport title will be available soon. This is an exciting new title that you can do with your dog without the protection phase of schutzhund. This should work for some of the club members that have either retired their dog from schutzhund, or possibly have a dog that is a great tracker and obedience dog, but is not great at the protection work. We will keep you informed on this title as the information is available.
Hope to see you in Niagara.

| President's Message - Spring 2011 | 2011-02-18 |
Hello Everyone,
Another year is upon us. For us out west we can continue with training as we don’t really have winter. I wish everyone good luck for the upcoming trial season.
The GSSCC board once again will have some proposed changes to vote on in the spring, please exercise your right to vote on them.
If you have been on the website lately you will likely notice some big changes. Our new web team has had some great ideas and is working very hard. The French side of the site is being built and material is being added to it. Translating is a lengthy process so I thank you in advance for your patience. If you want to place articles on the site and can produce them in both languages it would be a great help. I would like to thank Fred and Anick, and their helpers, for the translations I know this takes many hours to make sure that the ideas make sense after the translation.
We have now added Sarah Barnes, Cathie Pierson and Jamie-Lynn Pitts to our Web Team, so if they contact you for information please help them out. Without a steady flow of information the website can’t be kept current. I would like to thank Anthony Hartelaub for his years of work on the website and for continuing to help with the transition period for Sarah to take on the position. Thank you to everyone that has worked hard to make this organization move forward.
For The Sport,
Dave Jantzen
President GSSCC

| Year End President's Message | 2010-11-15 |
HI All
With the German Shepherd Championships and Sieger Show over and the WUSV Championship as well, we can all get back to training before winter is upon us.
Congratulations to Team Canada, Gabi, Lance, Raino, Robin and Ros, who all performed in a professional and sportsmanlike manner throughout the event. There will be no rest for the wicked, because Gabi, Lance and Raino will now have to start preparing for the WUSV World Universal in June 2011.
THE GSSCC WELCOMES A NEW REGION
We would like to let everyone know that the GSSCC Quebec Region was formed as of October 1st, 2010. There will be an update with contact information on the website and in Shepherd Sports. So you now have one more regional event to choose from and we have one more region to host the national Championship. The board wishes all the luck to the new Regional board and the clubs in Quebec.
On a sad note, GSSCC/SV judge Rudy Mietzner has passed away. Rudy was a judge for a long time and will be missed by all. He judged many trials in Canada and the USA and was always willing to help out if you needed it. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the GSSCC executive.
